Most of us have heard of Aloe vera as a medicinal treatment, and perhaps grown one, but less widely known are their lovely flowering cousins.
The Spider Aloe forms dense clumps of leaves at the base, but in Summer throws up spectacular red hot poker style flowers which last for several Months.
Grow in pots with a lot of grit, sand or gravel in, they are slow growing. Fine outside on Summer patios when they are at their best, but protect from frost on a windowsill or conservatory in Winter. Avoid overwatering too - they have wet roots for any period.
