Product Information

A stunning and striking architectural plant that suits modern garden designs, or desert and cactus styles, especially when planted up and displayed in a metallic pot.

This tough succulent really thrives in neglect and is surprisingly hardy in the UK - we have had them for 5+ years outdoors all year and are fine if you keep them very dry. It is a striking specimen, very slow growing over here, but long lasting.

Also known as the Century Plant as it was thought to flower every hundred years, it may actually flower after 20 -30 years - unleashing huge 3-5m tall flower spikes in a last act of bravado, as after flowering they die. However, there are normally lots of 'pups' around the sides by then, which immediately take its place.

Grow in a very free-draining mix with plenty of sand or gravel (up to 50% mix with compost). Once potted they should be fine for 5-10 years...

Warning - the leaves have very spiky tips, and some smaller ones on leaf margins. Handle with care. Avoid places where children or pets may brush against them.

What Is Supplied

Item 680166 supplied as:

Supplied as a 5 year old plant in a 3.5L pot, 30-40cm tall.

Beware of spines on leaf tips.

Top Tips

Best grown in a pot when the plants can be moved under cover during very cold winters. The trick to keeping Agave happy is to keep them on the dry side, especially over winter, otherwise they succumb to the cold.

Care Information

  • Best grown in an unglazed clay pot so that water can evaporate and also so that it can be brought under cover if temperatures fall.
  • Ensure the soil is well drained, and if grown in a pot, use a mix with at least 50% sand or grit - a cactus mix is ideal.
  • Place your Agave in a spot that receives plenty of sun.
  • Water once or twice a week until established.
  • Agaves in containers will need more water than those in the ground and should also be re-potted every other year to replenish soil and root prune the plant.
  • If growing outside where you can be sure of adequate winter protection, grow in a particularly gritty soil, allowing plants to dry out between watering.
  • In spring, add a granular general-purpose feed to the soil.

Warning - the leaves have very spiky tips, and some smaller ones on leaf margins. Handle with care and wear gloves. Do not plant where children or pets may brush against them.
