Product Information

P>Have you ever thought about exotic your garden would look if you could orchids outside? Well now you can with these exuberant, hardy garden orchids. Easy to grow, and frost-resistant, Garden Orchids will bring a tropical touch to your own garden.

Bred to be perfectly at home in UK gardens, this new generation of hybrids are long flowering with good growth, are completely hardy and best of all affordable. Aditionally, because they are commercially grown, we can guarantee that no wild colonies have been plundered!

Calanthe (also known as the Christmas Orchid) is easy to keep in the garden with temperatures as low as -10C, becoming dormant over the winter before returning each spring with its display of amazing, tropical flowers. This selection of hybrid Calanthe produces spectacular candelabra-like, scented blooms in a huge range of colours from yellow through to deep red which last for up to 12 weeks.

Much more resilient and vigorous than the species previously offered for sale, these garden orchids will grow and bloom in any garden, on the patio or your balcony too, growing well in an average garden soil as long as a few simple requirements are met. This hardy perennial plant naturalises when happy and will come back bigger and better each year with its fabulous flowers, even in the darkest corner of your garden as it thrives in shade!

In contrast to other winter-hardy Orchids, the leaves of Calanthe remain green through the winter. Cut the old leaves with secateurs in March, taking care to avoid the new shoots as they emerge. Flowers will follow in May on one or more stems*

Easy to maintain for all types of gardener whatever your level of experience, Calanthe is real Orchid for the garden!

*Please note that as we supply plants without flower, we cannot guarantee the colour that you will receive.

Top Tips

Calanthe can be planted in the garden without a problem, and also make exceptional specimens on a terrace or balcony in a pot. Keep in mind to use a pot with a diameter of 30-40cm in order to have enough place for the new shoots to emerge the following spring.

Care Information

  • Plant Calanthe in a sunny, semi-shaded place in the garden, but avoid direct sunlight.
The leaves remain on the plant in the winter and can be covered with straw to protect them from frost.
  • Calanthe is winter hardy down to -10C although when severe frost is forecast, we recommend protecting the plant with an extra layer of compost. Potted plants can be moved to an unheated shed or garage.
  • Plant in well-drained, humus-rich soil, making sure that there is adequate drainage. When planting, incorporate some orchid compost through the existing soil in the planting hole to open it up.
  • Keep plants well-watered. Calanthe likes the soil to be moist and well drained. Do not allow to stand in water.
  • Feed in March with a controlled release fertilizer in tablet form.
  • Calanthe flowers from May. In ideal circumstances plants may flower for up to 12 weeks. The plant develops several stems with 6 12 flowers each.
