Product Information

Campsis x Tagliabuana 'Grenadine' is a new introduction, bred specifically for robust growth and an abundance of bright red flowers over a long period. This vigorous climbing plant comes into bloom as early as June with large trumpet flowers and keeps going until September.

Each flower is a subtle shade of bright red with a slight orange tone on the reverse and are produced in loose clusters. The throat of the flower is filled with short curved stamens, and the coral red blooms contrast magically with the dark green, glossy, deciduous foliage. The vine is self clinging, so needs only minimal tying in to get it started - 'Grenadine' is a sturdy climber and will run up any support be it trellis, arbour, a wall or even an old tree

A cross between Campsis radicans (native to the hot and dry regions of the south-eastern United States), and Campsis grandiflora, (from China) this is a hybrid that has inherited the best properties of both parents with the hardiness of radicans and the sturdy stems and spectacular flowers of grandiflora as well as good resistance to disease.

Sure to be a garden favourite, 'Grenadine is a fast-growing vine which will reach more than H6m x W4m, although can easily be restricted by pruning to size. We supply an established plant in a 1L pot, ready to plant straight out.

Top Tips

Grow Campsis against a warm sunny wall and provide shelter from cold winds - they need full sun to ripen the wood if they are to flower freely.

Care Information

Planting Advice for your Campsis 'Grenadine':

  • Grow in a sunny, sheltered site in well-drained soil.  Protect from drying winds. Plants will tolerate light shade.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the climber you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your climber in the hole at the same level at the pot, about 30cm (1ft) away from the structure that you wish it to climb up and angled towards the support.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and  mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare advice for Campsis 'Grenadine':

  • Hardy to -10C, protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to young plants.
  • Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser such as our Blooming Fast Superior Plant Food or fish, blood and bone, scattered at the base in early spring.
  • Campsis are fairly drought tolerant, but newly established plants should be watered in dry spells.
  • Young plants are best tied-in to supporting wires as it takes two or three years to establish a strong woody framework of branches.

Pruning Advice for Campsis:

  • Once a framework is established, usually in two to three years, spur-prune side shoots annually in late winter.
  • This involves cutting back side shoots to within two or three buds of the main stems.
  • Remove any weak growth and cut back damaged stems close to the base.
