Product Information

Tamarix tetrandra, more commonly known as the Tamarisk or Salt Cedar, is a deciduous shrub or small tree grown for its incredible spring flowers.

Gracefully arching dark, almost black branches with needle-like foliage explode into masses of feathery plumes of tiny blossom in shades of pink during March and May. These amazing flowers will completely cover the plant creating an enchanting effect in the spring garden.

Fully deserving of its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for a beautiful display for years to come.

Thriving in full sun or dappled shade, Tamarisk needs nothing more that occasional pruning to removed dead or crossing branches and to keep it in shape. It is completely hardy to -15°C, so it will withstand the worst of winter weather.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2 L pot, ready to plant, growing to a height and spread of 3 m (10 ft).

Top Tips

  • Try growing a climber up you Tamerisk to bring summer height and colour to your garden.

Care Information

  • Dig a hole twice the width of the roots, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, and add some good quality fertiliser such as Blood, Fish and Bone.
  • Aim to plant at the same depth as the soil mark on the trunk.
  • Holding the tree or plant upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil, and gently shake the plant, so the soil falls back around the roots.
  • Use your heel to compact the soil around the plant to ensure good contact around the roots.
  • If you are planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast. Use the best compost you can buy.
  • Do not allow plants to dry out in the first four months after planting. Once established for one season, they will become much more tolerant to a lack of water, as the root system develops.
  • There is no real need to prune for the first 2 years, then prune to the shape and size you want. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter to control size.
  • Prune established trees in summer, removing weak shoots, and cutting out those that cross over each other.
