Our collection of three patio varieties is the perfect way to fill your garden with colour and perfume.

Forsythia are one of the first garden plants to burst into flower in spring and are easy to grow, needing little maintenance to get the best from them. They're all suitable for growing in a large pot, so you don't even need a garden to enjoy their beauty.

We have selected three of the best compact varieties in three different colours so that you can experience the magic of forsythia without having to choose between the colours.

We supply one plant each of three varieties:

White Forsythia Abeliophyllum distichum

Gorgeous fragrance and attractive foliage.
Compact and perfect for small gardens - just 1.5m height and spread over 10 years.

Yellow Forsythia, 'Maree d'Or' (or Golden Bells)

Reaching only 60-80cm tall and spreading to 1m or so in 5-7 years.

Care Information

Planting Advice for your Forsythia collection:

  • Best in a sunny position protected from hard frost which can damage fresh shoots.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling)
Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
If youíre planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.

Aftercare advice for forsythia:

  • Plants enjoy regular watering and don't like to dry out. It's especially important to keep plants well-watered while they establish, especially if planted up in a pot.
  • Feed twice a year - in spring and summer - while in full growth.
  • Mulch plants every winter - our straw mulch is ideal!

Pruning Advice for your forsythia:

  • Prune after flowering in spring, cutting back some of the old wood to a vigorous side shoot.
  • Once established, after flowering in spring cut back every second or third flowered shoot to the base.
  • After pruning, mulch with a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of well-rotted compost or manure.
