It's a deciduous shrub so bare in winter, in spring the young leaves quickly deepen in colour with a waxy sheen before turning deep red in autumn. Feathery flowers appear in summer, singly they are insignificant yet together they give the plant a hazy look leading to it's common name - Smoke Bush.

Fully hardy, it thrives in most soils but needs a sunny spot to do best. Cotinus is easy to maintain needing just an occasional light trim to encourage new growth which enhances the display of foliage.  Delivered as an established plant in 3L pot ready for immediate planting out..

To encourage better leaves at the expense of flowers, cut back in late spring, although ensure that your cotinus is well established before hard pruning.

Care Information

Planting Advice for Cotinus coggyria 'Royal Purple':

  • Best grown in well-draining soil in full sun or partial shade
  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare advice for Cotinus 'Royal Purple':

  • Water regularly until established.
  • After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
