Product Information

Nothing beats the iconic Ilex aquifolium, the common English Holly,  a native tree with which we have developed a rich history, not is part due to it evergreen nature and bright berries. It's no coincidence that the traditional festive colours of green and red just so happen to be the very two colours that this hardy tree are decked with over the coldest and dullest months of the year.

With this easy-care evergreen shrub, you will have year-round interest too. It can be grown in pots as it is slow growing and very hardy - everyone can make space in thier garden for some holly!

Holly forms an almost perfect pyramid of glossy, spiky leaves with vivid red berries on pollinated female plants. It's ideal too as a hedging plant where its prickly form provides ample deterrent against intruders.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come. It's also recommended by the RHS as a Plant for pollinators so will attract wildlife into your garden.

Supplied as a plug-grown sapling 20-25cm from end to end, ready for immediate planting, your holly may reach 12m high x 8m wide, but can easily be controlled by pruning.

NB: Holly is a 'dioecious' tree, meaning it has separate male and female plants. White flowers appear in May and the berries emerge on female plants around November. Please note that we cannot guarantee whether you'll receive a male or female tree.

Top Tips

Add mycorrhizal fungi to the planting hole to help your new tree establish quicker.

Care Information

  • Best in an open sunny site in most soil types.
  • If your planting area is overgrown, cut the grass short and weed.
  • When planting, dig a hole 3 x the size of the plug and incorporate some organic matter.
  • Plant at the same level as the top of the plug - look for the mark on the tree where it originally started to grow above the ground.
  • Backfill gently around the tree and water in well. Don't compact the soil.
  • Stake young trees with a cane to prevent lopsided growth.
  • Add a tree guard if necessary.

Pruning Advice:

  • Mature trees require very little attention.
  • When pruning is required, prune only when fully dormant from late summer to before mid-winter to prevent 'bleeding'.
  • When young, any laterals can be removed to produce a clear trunk, along with any dead, diseased or damaged branches.
