Product Information

Thuja are evergreen conifer trees with a narrow, conical habit, and Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' is a beautiful example of this highly decorative tree.

A slow-growing, ornamental shrub with erect sprays of bright green, aromatic foliage, the Emerald Thuja is a colourful way to add height and structure to your beds and borders.

Perfectly happy as a container plant, anyone can grow this garden gem, whether you have a large garden or a compact terrace or balcony.

Easy to grow, 'Smaragd' (or the White Cedar as it is sometimes referred to) is a great plant for both new and experienced gardeners as it requires little to no maintenance - its growth is naturally narrow, so it doesn't need regular pruning to keep its shape.

Hardy down to -45°C, thuja is also extremely tolerant of the cold, just needing protection from drying winter wind especially while it is young.

The perfect plant for flower beds and borders, Thuja Smaragd excels in City & Courtyard gardens as well as Cottage & Informal gardens, Gravel and Rock gardens as well as on the Patio in a container.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for immediate planting. Grows to around 2.5m x 2.5m.

Care Information

Aftercare Advice for Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd':

  • Newly planted conifers need regular watering to prevent browning - once established they are drought proof.
  • Remove weeds as soon as they appear and mulch well to reduce water loss.

Planting advice for your Thuja 'Smaragd':

  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Sprinkle on some Root grow to help establish a sound root system.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Pruning advice for your Thuja:

  • No pruning is required although you can clip to retain its height from spring to late summer, just avoid cutting into old wood.
  • If your plant gets too tall for where you have planted it, clip the top to keep it at the required height.
