Product Information

We are delighted to offer this exciting new seed-raised compact Canna variety, the result of years of breeding and selection.

'Canasta' is a dwarf canna series, reaching only 80cm or so tall, so is the ideal variety for planting in large patio pots and containers. Canna are a real summer dazzler - their exotic and exuberant coloured flowers are set off by lush, jungle like green or purple/brown leaves, giving a real taste of the tropical, yet they are very tough and hardy.

Canna will form tubers over 2-3 years, so give them space - for huge impact, plant all 6 in a 30cm (12in) diameter pot. Grow in full hot sun when they start growing, which can be later in spring. Feed every 2-3 weeks, and water well, and they will explode into leaf and colour for high summer displays.

Top Tips

  • Hold off cutting off old flowers - new flowering shoots come up from within the dead flower and, a month or so later, youll get more blooms.
  • Cannas perform best in semi or full shade, so use these striking plants to transform darker parts of the garden.
  • Purple and striped varieties will fade in the sun so provide shade to retain their colours.

Care Information

Planting Advice for your cannas:

  • Cannas can be planted outdoors or containers. During spring, before planting the canna lily, wait until all threat of frost has passed.
  • Groups of cannas should be planted about a foot or two apart.
  • While technically they dont have a top or bottom, canna rhizomes (when supplied bare root) can be planted horizontally with the eyes facing up.
  • Cover the rhizomes with 3 to 6 inches of soil.
  • Water well and apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture.
  • Potted plants can be planted straight out where they are to flower.

Aftercare advice for canna lilies:

  • Water freely in dry spells.
  • Apply a general-purpose liquid feed in midsummer.
  • If temperatures are maintained above 10C (50F) cannas will remain in growth all winter and flower occasionally.
  • Lift the plants in autumn after the foliage has been frosted. Break large clumps into two or three and pot the pieces into 10in (or so) pots.
  • You can then overwinter them in any frost-free shed or greenhouse, keeping them just slightly moist.
When the plants start to push up their red shoots in spring, bring them into a light place, water well and protect them from late frosts.
  • By June, growth will be well under way and they can be planted out once more.

Pruning advice for cannas

  • Little pruning or training is needed, just stake clumps in exposed positions.
  • When a flower spike has no more buds, prune it down to the next side shoot where a secondary flower spike should develop.
